a taste of spring

After weeks of below-freezing temperatures, which kept January's snow in a thick, solid layer, we had a burst of spring-like weather, reaching well into the 70's.  As the snow quickly melted, we took one last opportunity to slide down the sled "ramp" we'd built in the back yard.

The cold weather has since returned (along with another 5 inches of snow), but it won't be long before we're running around the yard without jackets again!

the BIG snow - 2011

This year's big snowstorm might have been a lot less "big" than last year's big storm, but 8 inches (on top of what we already had) was enough to have school canceled for the day, and was plenty of snow to lure all the neighborhood kids outside to play for the last several days.

the snow bunny and the house mouse

Evyn LOVES the snow; Andrew hates the cold. Still, they manage to find ways to play 'together' in the wintry weather:

that's a cup full of snow that Evyn is eating - of course.

snow aftermath

These pictures were taken more than a week ago.
Several sunny days have melted much of it, but we still have more than a foot of it around our home!

Evyn went out to find our vegetable garden.
There is a fence around it, just in front of where she is standing (you can see a tiny bit of it in the center of the picture).

Then she settled into a lawn chair to watch her Daddy make paths to the shed and the basement door with the snowblower:

Andrew is not a fan of snow. Which is fine by me - one less little person to wriggle in and out of soggy boots and snowsuits. He did enjoy watching Scott & Evyn from the comfort of his high chair:

the second BIG snow

Last week we were hit with the second big snowstorm.

I took this picture from inside our garage door, Evyn was outside clearing the snow from around the door frame:

Check out the birdbath, the snow covered the whole base, up to the bowl:

The girl next door managed to make it over to our yard - remarkably, without snowshoes:

We had a foot + of snow on our COVERED patio:

blizzard!

OK, technically it wasn't a blizzard, but we did get lots of snow (2 feet) followed by high winds that created drifts nearly 5 ft. tall around our property. My pictures just don't do it justice... the ridges of snow formed by the high winds were really beautiful.

Some of you have been asking whether I've managed to catch Andrew's nostril fascination on camera yet. You can stop asking... I have!

It's morphed into a whole new thing, though. What started as him "finding" his nostrils, turned into a bit of confusion on the definition of the word "nose."
See, if you ask him where his nose is, he immediately goes for the nostril.
And if you say the word "no," he often confuses it with "nose" and... well, goes for the nostril.

On a similar but less yucky note... he loves eyes and eyelashes. He'll point to your eyes and say the word "eye." But if you ask him where Andrew's eyes are..... he points to his ears.
I can't figure that one out. I've given up trying.... he's just our lovable, funny little goofball.

Snow fort: day 2

After a day and a half the snow stopped falling and we started digging out. Scott and Evyn were back at their snow fort, and a neighbor girl came to check it out and play.

Andrew ventured out for about as long as it took to snap these pictures. He wasn't keen on the cold or the snow- which was fine by me, as I'd already been out most of the morning shoveling!
